Let me introduce myself.
Hello, my name is Ximena Yamilet Herrera Ambriz. I am enrolled in the technical program in programming and I would like to attend Universidad Nueva Baja.
I would like to begin with the reason I pushed myself to continue my studies, and I believe it all comes back to my grandparents — the way they always spoke with such nostalgia about their school years, and how much they wished they had been able to finish their education and build a career. I remember my grandmother always telling me how much she had dreamed of becoming a nurse, and my grandfather, in the same way, never let go of his dream of becoming a lawyer.
I also remember how, with whatever knowledge they had, they educated me — not only academically, but they taught me to value life and to learn from time itself. They inspired me to want to keep studying, to grow through learning, and to never give up.
I am currently studying the technical programming track. I chose it because I knew it would be a challenge — even though I’m not particularly comfortable with technology, I wanted to test myself and push beyond my limits. I wanted to prove that I am capable of achieving anything I set my mind to with dedication and hard work. Although I took it on as a challenge at first, over time I genuinely began to appreciate my coursework and feel proud of my decision.
My grandparents didn’t only inspire me — they also gave me hands-on support: they taught me to read and write. They encouraged me when the idea of entering storytelling competitions crossed my mind, and they were right there with me, reading me stories over and over until I had learned them by heart. As if that weren’t enough, my mom was also there, helping me put together the costumes I would wear in each competition.
I remember practicing my lines with her before every performance, and how she would tell me jokes to help me shake off the nerves before going on stage. Even though I’ve always been fairly outgoing, nerves would sometimes catch me off guard — but my family was always there, without fail.
One of my dreams is to study Law or Political Science. I have always loved defending a position and debating with solid arguments. I would like to defend human rights and ensure they are respected, because I see it as a way of giving a voice to those who cannot advocate for themselves.
With that knowledge, I could help resolve conflicts, and I would also like to serve as an advisor to people who cannot afford to hire a lawyer. That is the group of people I hope to serve once I achieve my dream.
My plan after graduating is to keep learning and growing. If the opportunity arises, I would also like to study International Relations with a focus on International Law — but not before preparing myself and learning English, as it is an essential tool for that field.
I believe this scholarship will be an opportunity to make something real that perhaps I hadn’t fully seen as within reach — not because I lacked the drive to continue studying; on the contrary, I would be thrilled — but because of my uncertain financial situation.
I have worked hard, taking on multiple jobs throughout high school: babysitting, cleaning houses, selling burritos at school, and currently cleaning at a public pool facility. My mom says that at this rate I’ll end up having more jobs than Barbie herself.
Even though money has been an obstacle, transportation is also a serious challenge. Where I live — Rancho 40 — there is no public transit, so I have to walk down to school, even if that means waking up two hours before the school day begins.
Growing up in a neighborhood like Rancho 40 is complicated. When it rains, the streets become dangerous — sometimes it is impossible to get in or out. When that happens, I can’t make it to school, and even when classes move online, the internet cuts out constantly, making it impossible to attend those either.
And yet, despite the weather, the distance, and the financial uncertainty, my goal remains intact. This scholarship is not only financial support — it is the opportunity to show that my effort, and every sacrifice I have made, has been worth it.

B E C AÂ Â R O T A R Y
